With this month being black history month, I am spending this time highlighting modern black progress. Please understand, I love Harriet, Sojourner truth, Martin, Malcolm, Booker T., and all the slaves; however, I feel that we spend too much time looking back instead of learning to appreciate how far we have come today. Like the people that I mentioned previously, WE are history.

Here is yet another story that reminds me that the efforts of those that came before us were not in vain. This article is on the rapidly growing black middle class in the Maryland area.

“If he is successful, he’ll join the 54 percent of African-American households in the county that own their own homes. While that’s still below the 71 percent of white households that are homeowners, it’s better than the 46 percent national average, according to the Census…”

“Like all homeowners in the county, African Americans are seeing the value of their investment increase. The median sale price of homes in Anne Arundel County climbed to $300,000 in January, up 22 percent from a year ago, according to the Metropolitan Regional Information Systems.”

“Raymond Langston, vice mayor of Highland Beach and a member of the county Minority Business Enterprise Committee, said the growth of minority middle class in the county during the last eight years has been unprecedented. He attributed the rise to county economic development policies.” (more…)
