Yes, there is Black history on the West coast
on September 13th, 2007 at 2:50 am(insidebayarea.com) OAKLAND — Four years ago, Eddie Abrams took an informal survey in Oakland’s African-American community and was disturbed to find the majority was unaware of one of California’s most important monuments to black history: Allensworth State Historic Park in the Central Valley, the site of a pioneer settlement that was governed, financed and operated by African Americans at the turn of the last century.
“Eight out of 10 people had never even heard of it,” Abrams said Wednesday, still stunned by the fact after all this time. “We’re talking about people who should know — top educators and clergy people. It’s a valuable part of our history, and my goalis to raise awareness.”
So he chartered buses and took people on a trip into the past. He’ll do it again Saturday with his third annual tour. (more…)
