Abbeville Churches Hold Reconciliation Service For 1916 Lynching
No One Ever Charged In Man’s Death
ABBEVILLE, S.C. — A group of white church leaders apologized Tuesday for a lynching that took place nearly a century ago.
“There has been a wall between us. If we are going to be reconciled, we are going to pull down that wall,” Rev. J. Wendell Rhodes said.
Hundreds of Upstate residents gathered at a church in Abbeville for a reconciliation service where white church leaders apologized to blacks for the lynching of Anthony Crawford.
“We confess the sins of our fathers who chose to lynch Anthony Crawford for the color of his skin. We ask for forgiveness from our African-American brothers and sisters,” a white pastor said.

These kind of services have been going on for years in many Christian circles. The size of these events range from a few people to a few thousand. Why is it that newsworthy events like this one RARELY get front page status on OUR newspapers?
We spend years wanting white folk to apologize for their “sins”, and when they do—we overlook it.
Not too long ago I asked the question on this site “Do black folks really want to be treated as equals”. I think for quite a few of us (not all), I think the answer is NO. To be honest with you, in today’s world it is much more profitable to play the game of one-upmanship (i.e. continue to rake “whitey” over the coals of guilt).
