Wickam needs to investigate the story before asuming Mfume is being considered for his color. I haven't placed my support behind anyone but Mfume is one of the better candidates Maryland has for Senate.

Somehow, the Democrats were surprised by Sarbane's withdrawl. So two of the 'big names' have selected to run for the Governor's seat in 2006. There were two other potential black candidates (Cong. Cummings & Wynn) and when Mfume jumped, Wynn pulled out and I suspect Cummings will do likewise. There are some other white candidates but with lesser name recognition than Mfume.

So far, the Republicans have three potential candidates (Lt. Gov. Steele (who is black), Popkin (he ran against Milkulski in 2004) and the Governor's wife (I have not idea why)). Steele is looking at 2010 and the Governor's seat and the Governor's wife name has come up in some scandals. Popkin is what the Republicans would call a RINO. He didn't have much of a stance against Milkulski except "I agree but ...".

Wickam may look upon this as some color issue but the reality of the politics will play into the outcome.

I'm looking forward to the race.

Maryland doesn't have a great deal of young talent in either party biting the reins.
