My take on the strategy of Wal-Mart:

1. Buy low priced goods(1st rule of capitalism: buy low).

2. Advertise to a wide spectrum(but mostly to those of low income).

3. Build many, many, many, many locations, saturating the local area.

4. Keep prices lower than or as low as others markets in vicinity.

5. Pay employees a low income.

6. Repeat #2.

7. Induce employees to shop at store.

In my city, there was quite a bit of uproar about a Wal-Mart built in the extreme south part of the city, near a crossroad of two state highways, about a year ago. I bought a video game there for my niece, because many shops downtown are niche stores (they teamed up against the supercenter, unsuccessfully) that don't carry a wide variety of items. They also have excellent 18 in frozen supreme pizzas for $8.99. It's important to keep in mind: All stores have their little treasures! One stop shopping may have been a necessity in the 1870's West- general stores- but...I know better, and I'm sure a potent minority does as well, than to buy dazzlingly cheap goods for the sake of the shortsighted economics of convenience. I prefer to increase my wardrobe one pair of pants at a time than to buy 5 Costa Rica sweatshop sweatshirts for $25. I ask others not to give me products from there, because those rare times I go to Wal-Mart, I am highly selective in what I buy. I make $7 an hour myself! Nonetheless, I don't want $50 shoes that last 8 months, I want $150 kicks that go the distance: shoes I buy downtown.

It is all about balancing quality over value.
