Fourteen months after President George W. Bush was re-elected without carrying Wisconsin, five men who worked for the Kerry-Edwards campaign, including the sons of two prominent Milwaukee politicians, go on trial today on felony counts of vandalism in the tire-slashing of more than 20 vehicles rented by Republican campaigners.

The incident, and the felony charges filed two months later, drew Milwaukee national attention from political partisans, against a backdrop of allegations of election fraud in the city. Only a handful of criminal charges of election fraud have been filed, and U.S. Attorney Steven M. Biskupic has said that no evidence of a conspiracy has been discovered despite an extensive investigation. (more…)

Do you remember all of those stories floating around about how Republicans were employing “Jim Crow” tactics to hinder poor blacks (notice, not just blacks) from voting? How about the story regarding the stream of black cars arriving in some black part of town in America where men armed with clipboards instructed blacks not to vote or else. As much as that story circulated throughout cyberspace, you would have thought that at least one person would have been able to get a tag number from one of those vehicles.

All kidding aside, there is no doubt in my mind that Republicans have been guilty of voter day shenanigans. If you read last year’s report issued by The American Center for Voting Rights (ACVR–a non-partisan group backed by both Democrats and Republicans), you will find that it was Democrats that engaged in most of the voter suppression (I included part of that report on this site. For for the rest of the report, please visit the ACVR website –link is included).

If you think that I am justifying a wrong with a wrong, think again. I have been very clear on this site that voter suppression regardless of where it comes from is wrong and should be dealt with in an unbiased manner. What bothers me is that while many black Democrats had no problem pointing out this wrong elsewhere, so few of them (none that I have met or know personally) are willing to admit that Democrats are just as guilty in this area.

I dunno. Maybe Haliburton made them do it.
