A new, low-power television station featuring programming aimed at the African-American community is getting ready to go on the air, the station general manager said Thursday.
And while the over-the-air signal will likely reach only homes in Duval County, the station has reached agreement with Comcast Corp. to make the station available for all of its 300,000 cable television subscribers in the Jacksonville area.
WJXE TV-15 is scheduled to launch on Dec. 1, vice president and general manager Michael Anapolsky said. But it will take a little longer to get on Comcast, where it will be carried on channel 14.
The station expects to feature local programming targeting an African-American audience. Anapolsky said Jacksonville is the nation’s 49th-largest television market overall, but it’s the 26th-largest African-American market.
“We feel it’s an extraordinary opportunity in terms of audience potential,” he said.
The station will not have a news operation, but it is planning a daily Monday-through-Friday local morning show called The First Coast Breakfast Club, which will offer lifestyle, health and other features. (more…)
