Question from one of my young readers

I have noticed for sometime now that a portion of the traffic to this site comes from middle and high schools (you can tell this by the k12 domain). From time to time they leave very interesting comments. Here is a young sistah who e-mailed me with a question that I thought would be good if I just posted it and let you (the readers of this site) answer it for her.

Hi,My name is LaTonya.Im doing a school project and need help with alot of things.I really need to know whats the name of a celebration for a male african american and mexican.The celebration im looking for is when a male not a female crosses from childhood to adulthood.I would really love if you could contact me by email before thursday.

So far, I am not finding anything for the cultures you are asking about. Mexican culture only has the QuinceaÃƒÂ±era for girls, but as far as I know nothing for young men. I’ll keep looking when I get the chance later this evening.

As far as I know, the male crossing over for our latin brothers is known as a quincenero, or Quince Anos. For the girl it is quincenera.

I don’t know about african americans per say but back in africa, and what was brought here and now that rite has died by not being practived any more was called “The Simba Wachanga”.
