I have made it a point to avoid speaking on such polarizing issues simply because that is all it does—polarizes. Red state people over there, blue state people over there. The whole thing can be very stupid and non-productive.
There has been something that I have noticed with this news-bit of the hour that has caused me to come out of my cave on this issue–how a grieving woman can be used for propaganda.
prop·a·gan·da – The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause (emphasis added).
I may not agree with her politics but one thing is for certain, when her protest down in Texas is all over, this is going to be one lonely person. You would think that with the news of her family distancing themselves from her and the greater blow of her husband filing for divorce that those who are pumping this grieving woman up with their rhetoric would back off and leave this woman alone.
The real truth here is that Liberalism only sees individuals as vehicles–vehicles to carry its message of the hour. Arguably, todays’ brand of Conservatism does the same as many who call themselves Conservatives have made this woman into the lighting rod of everything we dislike about Liberalism.
Although this woman is out there on her own accord, she is still a woman that is in grieving. Unless you have been there yourself, you would not understand the emotional “swings” a person goes through during this time (sometimes for years). Yet the selfish eagerness of people to make her into the “it” girl for their cause simply overlooks that fact.
When the sun finally sets on Sheehan’s vigil, the cameras will no longer surround her, protesters “for” and “against” her will move to the next “symbol”, and we the general public will continue with our daily lives.
As for Sheehan, she will face with something that most of us are afraid of-
loneliness.
