(newsobserver.com) RALEIGH – The new chairwoman of the N.C. Legislative Black Caucus has ordered an audit of the group’s nonprofit foundation amid worries from the past chairwoman, Rep. Beverly Earle of Charlotte, that the group spent too much money on its annual conference and banquet.
The caucus foundation spent $50,000 on its 2005 conference, nearly as much as the $54,000 that the group awarded in grants, including scholarships, that year, according to federal tax filings. No financial information was available on the 2006 conference.
Rep. Alma Adams, a Greensboro Democrat and the new caucus chairwoman, also has put the caucus’ fundraising on hold until the State Ethics Commission advises the group whether it can raise foundation money without violating new ethics rules.
Adams emphasized that requesting an audit is something she has routinely done whenever she has helped run a nonprofit.
“That was something I did because I felt we were going through a transition and that’s what you do,” Adams said this week. “It was not because of any fear or any information I had about money missing.” (more…)
