The National Center for Black Philanthropy, Inc. (NCBP) was established to promote and strengthen African American participation in all aspects of modern philanthropy. The Center was incorporated in the District of Columbia on November 30, 1999 and received a determination in 2000 that it is tax exempt under Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Center is also exempt from sales and use tax in the District of Columbia.

The Mission of the National Center is to promote giving and volunteerism among African Americans, foster full participation by African Americans in all aspects of philanthropy, educate the public about the contributions of Black philanthropy, strengthen people and institutions engaged in Black philanthropy, and research the benefits of Black philanthropy to all Americans.

The National Center conducts several programs chief among which are national and regional conferences on black philanthropy that began in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1997 with the First National Conference on Black Philanthropy. In 1998 the first regional conference on black philanthropy was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in collaboration with several local organizations. The second and third national conferences were held in Oakland California in 1999 and in Detroit, Michigan in 2001. Regional conferences were conducted in Boston, Massachusetts and Greensboro, North Carolina in 2000, and in Baltimore, Maryland and Greensboro in 2002. Four regional conferences are now being planned for 2004, and the Fifth National Conference, the Fifth Anniversary of the national conferences, is currently being planned for 2005.

While the conferences will remain a major focus of its activities, other programs of the National Center include promoting increased giving among African American businesses, educating the public about the philanthropic contributions of African Americans; strengthening and supporting African Americans involved in philanthropy, and researching the benefits of Black philanthropy to all Americans.
