MALI, Beyond Timbuktu
Photographs by Malian and U.S. Photographers
Saturday, January 21, 2006
6:00 – 9:00pm
MALI, Beyond Timbuktu is an exhibit exploring this West African
country through images by Malian photographers Alioune Bâ and Amadou
Sow, and American photographers Nestor Hernández, Shawn Davis, Sora
Devore.
These five artists worked together through a unique photography
workshop for Malian youth entitled Visual Griots in January, 2005.
Their work in this exhibit represent their view of Mali through
individual interpretations and personal experiences. The exhibit gives
us a unique perspective, bringing together a view of Mali through
the eyes of Malian and U.S. image makers.
As one of the earliest of the medieval Sudanic empires, Mali has
captured the attention of historians from the Middle Ages to the
present day. A mystical land of ancient empires and sandstone mosques,
Mali is one of the largest countries in West Africa.
Mali’s people are proud of their illustrious history as well as their
culture. Their strength, independence, and hard work have enabled them
to survive in this beautiful environment.
Exhibit runs:
