Making a difference in film

LOS ANGELES: Pimps, prostitutes and thugs often have big parts in Hollywood movies set in black America, but if Jeff Clanagan succeeds, audiences may soon see smart, independent films about mainstream African-American life.

Clanagan formed Codeblack Entertainment this year to distribute films like “Preaching to the Choir,” a drama that played at festivals in 2005 and debuts in 150 commercial theaters on Friday.

“Preaching to the Choir” stars Tichina Arnold from TV’s “Everybody Hates Chris” and tells of a rap singer with a big hit who goes home, rediscovers his roots and finds romance. (more…)

If its positive, I’m down with it. I just would like to eventually see us move in other arenas besides the usual plots.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for years. Remember Watermelon man? Yes, I laughed like hell too, but wondered about the image being projected. The Blackploitation films got a lot of play in the ‘hood, but became parodies when they hit the suburbs.

Our liberal friends in Hollywood seem to think we are what they portray. An award for “It’s hard out here being a pimp”, or whatever the name of that atrocity was.

We need more people (mo’ peeps?) like Clanagan. We know what the liberals REALLY think of us, they’ve shown it.
