One of the biggest problems with public education is that everyone is expected to learn the material the same way. Sitting in a classroom for hours listening to a teach lecture about math concepts did not work for me at all. In fact, it helped me to hate math even more. Once I entered the real world and worked as an engineer for some years, I grew to love math because I saw how it could be applied in real world situations. There are too many kids flunking subjects not because they are dumb in that area, but because in many cases the way the subject is taught is incompatible to their learning style.
