April 11, 2008 — The American-born wife of a British billionaire was busted after she allegedly tried to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin into an event at the US Embassy in London.

“I have made a grave error,” socialite Eva Rausing, the wife of Tetra Pak drink-carton heir Hans Rausing, said hours after her arrest on drug charges. “I am very sorry.”

She was nailed going through security at the heavily guarded embassy, after guards stopped and searched her and discovered several “wraps” of the illicit drugs in her designer handbag.

Eva’s “error” also brought the hammer down on her hubby, who was arrested after police raided the couple’s $10 million, five-story townhouse in London’s Chelsea neighborhood and found another $5,000 worth of the drugs stashed away.

Hans Rausing had not been at the embassy function, but he and his wife – the parents of four young kids – were both hauled in for questioning by London’s Metropolitan Police and booked for possession.

They were released on an undisclosed amount of bail and are due back in court in July, according to Scotland Yard.

The philanthropic couple fund several charities – including one that helps drug addicts, according to the Daily Mail of Britain. (more…)
