First the news:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Two possible Democratic presidential candidates – Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and former vice presidential candidate John Edwards – will team up Wednesday with Wal-Mart watchdog group WakeUpWalMart.com to call on the world’s largest retailer to “put families first” and become a better employer.

Wakeupwalmart.com said the two Democrats are expected to participate in a national conference call entitled “Call for Change” scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. ET.

The group said both Edwards and Obama will be speaking out about Wal-Mart’s need to “put families first and become an employer that reflects the best of American values.” (more…)

Make no mistake about it! This is about gaining the support of unions–not American values (whatever that means). Unions have been trying to get into Wal-Mart for years with very little success for two main reasons: #1- Wal-Mart has historically kept unions out of its structure and #2 – Clearly there has not been enough demand for it amongst their own employees as Wal-Mart is rarely in short supply of employees.

What I HATE about the anti-Wal-Mart crowd is that most of its members have NEVER WORKED IN ANY OF ITS STORES. They make the assumption that the folks that choose to work there are just too stupid and don’t know what is best for them. [I have just entered my ranting mode] I have lost all respect for this crowd because while they claim to stand up for the rights of small business who they feel suffer anytime a Wal-Mart comes into town, they say nothing about the excessive lawsuit abuse against small businesses under the guise of discrimination against those with disabilities.

This move tells me that behind the great smile, favorable media coverage and heart-felt talks on Oprah, Sen. Obama is just another DC Liberal who is just shoring up his base for a possible presidential run. If Obama wants to be a representative of the people, then he should start by talking to the people who actually work at Wal-Mart instead of settling for elitism.
