(AP) MEMPHIS — If current demographic trends hold, Memphis could become the country’s first large metropolitan area with a majority black population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Census Bureau estimates from 2005 show the non-Hispanic white population in the eight-county Memphis metro area dipped below 50 percent for the first time — to 622,235 residents, or 49.4 percent of the area’s 1,260,905 residents.

The area’s 568,875 black residents comprised 45.1 percent of the total population, according to the estimates.

If current birth-death and migration trends continue, demographers say blacks will claim the 50 percent-plus distinction in a few years. (more…)

The only time I have been to Memphis was when I was in a layover for my next plane. Other than that I do not know anybody in that city.

If you either live there or know somebody that does, could you elaborate on what makes this city appealing to Blacks besides the fact that it is in the south? I am especially curious of this because I thought Atlanta was considered the largest Black Metro.
