I'm a little confused by Prof. Swain's argument America is ready to elect a minority president but not Sens. Clinton or Obama -- whom happen to be leading the polls for the Democratic Party nomination. I'd think a woman and/or Af-Am, Latino, Asian, etc., candidate who's already established they're capable of winning an election for the House or Senate has already established they're acceptible to a wide cross-section of voters.

I do, OTOH, understand her analysis of the campaign field. But those judgements are Prof. Swain's assessment of the candidates' credentials that have nothing to do with the public's attitude on a minority as the president.

Gov. Bill Richardson, another minority candidate, has chosen not to seek media attention as the nation’s first potential Hispanic candidate.

To be honest, Richardson has the most impressive resume of ALL candidates. He’s been in the US house, secretary of energy and an US ambassador.

If I HAD to a have a Democrat in office I would pick him.

Republicans could get into the game by persuading Condoleezza Rice to serve in the No. 2 position on a white-male headed ticket. Unfortunately, however, Rice’s Teflon image has been marred to the point that it is not clear whether she could attract the votes of women or blacks.

Rice’s approval numbers are usually higher than those of the president and the congress. I wouldn’t mind a Thompson/Rice or Thompson/Steele ticket.

There could be 3rd, possibly 4th party tickets in this race. An Obama/Richardson ticket is potent.

Obama and Richardson?!- that wins a good chunk of the North AND the West.

How could it lose?
