A very interesting read with an unexpected ending!!!

A man called me last week to say a Chicago Public Schools teacher had called his daughter, who’s African American, a racial slur.

I assumed I knew the slur–you know the nasty little one that begins with “n.” Still, I asked the man to tell me exactly what the teacher called his daughter.

The man’s response was so far from what I was expecting that I told him to start this story at the beginning.

The daughter is a 14-year-old freshman at Jones College Prep, which is among the most selective high schools in the city. It’s also among the most racially and economically diverse.

The Jones instructor who’s the subject of this tale teaches freshman honors literature. The school’s principal, Donald Fraynd, says the teacher is one of his best. He’s a notoriously tough grader and has been known to flunk an entire class rather than offer a curve.
