Some Central High School students signed a petition Wednesday in defense of a teacher they say has been unfairly disciplined for “mimicking an African-American” at a student-faculty basketball game.

Several students, black and white, said Wednesday after class that Greg Dougherty, a white economics and social studies instructor at the school, should not be fired for playing the game wearing an exaggerated Afro-like wig and brownish makeup. Even so, some students were offended by his act.

“Mr. D has really been wronged in all this,” said 17-year-old Jacob Hammer, a senior who circulated the petition. “He did something to kind of cheer everybody up and make them laugh, and what’s the school’s response? They’re just totally overreacting.” (more…)

I wonder how often this same school administration has heard the word “niggah” echoed in the halls of this school by both black and white students and did nothing.
