People near McKnight Mill Road say they’re prisoners in their own neighborhood because of gang activity.
Graffiti is scattered on bridges, sidewalks and signs throughout their neighborhood, but police say gangs are active all over Greensboro.
They estimate gangs have committed 170 robberies, nearly 600 burglaries and a dozen murders. (more…)

Parents needed to fight youth violence
(woodtv.com) KALAMAZOO — Youth violence is on the rise in West Michigan and Wednesday night, a discussion about it was held in Kalamazoo.
Police in Kalamazoo say calls about shots being fired are up at least 46 percent over last year. Some of those gang-related.
Wednesday, nationally recognized gang expert and Michigan State University Professor Carl Taylor spent the day meeting with residents, police and city officials.
The two suggestions that were heard over and over were more police patrols and parents keeping a closer eye on their kids.
“Parents need to have a calm but strong influence on their kids because this is life or death” Taylor said. (more…)

Local Community Acts to Keep Gangs Off Their Streets
A local community is taking on gangs and they are using each other’s support to keep them off their streets. Project Keen kicked off Tuesday night after seeing the success of Project Safe Village in west Las Vegas.
Keen stands for Keeping Everyone’s Eyes on the Neighborhood. They hope to reduce the number of violent calls to police in the area surrounding Clark High School. They are confident they can achieve the success Safe Village is making — especially after the turn out they got at Tuesday’s event. (more…)

Family tried to keep loved ones away from gangs
(chicagosuburbannews.com) The younger brother of a man fatally shot last week said he tried as much as possible to get the 23-year-old to stay with him within the safety of their basement apartment home.
But when the young teenager would sleep at night, he didn’t know where his older brother would often go.
Last Tuesday, Carlos Ocampo was in the passenger seat of a car when he was shot multiple times and killed after he and the driver argued with a group of people in another car while traveling through the 1200 block of 59th Avenue at about 10:30 p.m., police said.
Police said they believe the incident was gang-related.
In the past year, eight people have been fatally shot in Cicero.
Ocampo’s brother, Giovanni, said he didn’t like that his brother was involved with gangs because “they ruin everything.†(more…)
