(Eonline.com) Safe to say that Bill Clinton won’t be TiVo’ing ABC’s The Path to 9/11 this weekend.
Several of Clinton’s minions, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger and the former President’s personal attorney and Clinton Foundation head Bruce Lindsey have put pen to paper this week asking Disney CEO Robert Iger to yank the ballyhooed miniseries.
According to press materials, the two-part docudrama, airing commerical-free Sunday and Monday, is based on the 9/11 Commission’s sweeping review of what led to that national tragedy five years ago. But according to the Clinton crew, the miniseries plays fast and loose with history to wrongly cast blame of the terror attacks on Clinton officials. (more…)
This is just as dumb as when Conservatives raised all kinds of hell over Michael Moore’s flick or the TV movie about Former President Ronald Reagan.
IT’S A MOVIE!!
But then it occurred to me. Movies (fictional and non-fictional) have become the intellectual “one ring to rule them all!” In other words, for many people out there, the big screen/small screen is where opinions on serious matters such as politics are formulated–not history books. I think the difference today is that people read less and are inspired more by emotionally-charged arguments that are held together only by the ability to talk over those that are in disagreement.
Just think, a made-for-tv movie on network television (not a factual historical record by no stretch of the imagination) has caused a former president and part of his staff to come from nowhere and demand that it be altered to their taste (read the rest of the article mentioned above to find out what part of this movie caused an uproar). This is despite the fact that the 9/11 commission report (on which the movie claims to be based) supposedly tells the whole story. If people took the time to read the report, they would know for themselves what parts of this movie are fictitious vs. factual.
The sad truth here is that most people have not and will not read the 9/11 report cover to cover due to its length and dry presentation. Just another example of how movies (the interpretation of others) have become the “cliff notes” of history.
I wasn’t planning on watching this movie before and I still do not plan to watch it.
