I usually frequent the free concerts in Wingate Park, Brooklyn and I made it a point to NOT see Anita Baker. I saw her at Jones Beach Theatre years back and the discription that was given in this article was EXACTLY what I had paid money to see. Her attitude was as if she was doing the audience a favor for being there. She was humming tones to the sound engineer to ensure that the tone was to her liking (and it never was :). I remember seeing Heather Headley perform and she sang through the poor equalization of her voice and soon as a musical interlude was played in her set, she drilled the sound engineer an asshole. The point here is her focus was on the audience. She was performing for us, not herself. Anita Baker is one incredibly self-absorbed performer. She is a great studio musician and that's where she should stay.
