I use to have a gigantice box from Phillips, much as you described.

Lighted equalizer, dual cassette deck, detachable speakers.

I took it every where I went.

I listened to nothing but punk and thrash metal at the time.

My hair was down to my waist, I wore my biker leather (biker leather on someone whol walked every where or rode the bus!) at all times with a jean jacket with cut off sleves over it.

The jean had a patch on the back that covered the whole of the back of the jacket.

It said Slayer (the name of a thrash metal group), had a big skull on it and below the skull said “Kill and Kill again”.

Someone should have slapped me.

Yo! I had a real “boom box”. By that, I mean it wasn’t one of those k-mart dorm room radios that had detachable speakers. I bought it from my brother who got it in Korean when he was in the military. This mug was big and loud! It was so loud that I would put it in the front seat of my hooptie and everybody thought I had a booming system in my car. It was so big that I had to but it in the front seat long ways and lean the seat back a little. I finally had to throw it away when it kept eating up cassette tapes. Plus I couldn’t afford to keep putting 10 D batteries in it.
