Your post is not an example of black on black racism but classism. This is black on black racism:
1. A Jamaican real estate agent refusing to acknowledge a black during an open house because she has assumed the persons economic status.
2. Black students teasing another student for being too black and making black jokes.
3. Black women referring to lighter skinned women as weak based on skin color.
4. Black men dating white women exclusively and bashing black women in front of his partner.
5. A black woman with children who is afraid to stop in a black area because she thinks all blacks are criminals.
This list continues but I hope you get the idea.

I was raised in a State whose population is only two percent black. Most of my clients receiving welfare are white not black. The drug users are more likely to be white not black.
Studies showed that whites more than blacks were mostly likely to have committed a crime. But guess who the police stopped more often, blacks.

Same old house slave versus field slave mentality.
I am tired of black on black racism. I am tired of blacks believing that they are the only ones that are doing there thing for the "cause. I am tired of those who make more money than other blacks believing that those blacks that make less are so inferior that they had the right to dictate what we can and can't do. In fact, after moving to a predominately black city the blacks in power were more abusive, more vindictive and cruel than any of the white people I have dealt with. It is time black people stopped being racist.Whether some succeeds or fails or lives on government handouts has have nothing to do with the color of anyone's skin.

Racism! I was not born in the days of Slavery.. So I cannot say how it must have been. All over the world, slavery has existed; still does in many parts of Africa! In America, White slavery and other forms exist.

People are rotten, all over the world. The only place that has really tried to change this institution, is America.

You say blacks are victumized, well so are whites... I was 10 years old when I was chased down on my bike; kicked and punched by 5 black youthes, then they took my bike.

Since then almost every day out in public, some form of racial malic is practiced against me... Oh, I have a interacial marriage..

That is another story... People are rotten, period....

Good post. You make some great points that most people do not fully understand.

"Six months after Hurricane Katrina, some public officials in New Orleans are waving a “Keep Out” sign in front of some of its poorest residents. In many instances, the culprits are Black. If some of the statements made by New Orleans City Council President Oliver Thomas, an African American, had been uttered by a White person, he or she would have been lambasted as a racist.

“We’re going to target the people who are going to work,” Thomas said. “It’s not that I’m fed up, but that at some point there has to be a whole new level of motivation, and people have got to stop blaming the government for something they ought to do.”"

I like how you explained that. Very helpful. Thanks.

well I happed on this site mistakenly... but we all know nothing is accidental... I think if N.O. is going to start fresh they should start with a class of people who want to make life better for themselvs. I have myself been accused of being racist aginst my own race which is not the case.. I just believe that Especially our men need to wake up and take responsibility for themselvs. Not run from woman to woman or live with mom complaining they cant find a job.. I have been a single parent for 17 yrs and am the first to admit it has not always been easy but if I can go out there and bust my very shapely butt ...(lol) getting up at 5:30 am every morning to work why can't a grown Man. We have allowed to many excuses to run our life it is time to just stand up as a people, teach our daughters it is not about your hair and your nails when your children cant read or write... but i am not going to preach today...have a good one.

I love my people, I surely do, and I certrainly believe that systematic oppression still exists, but as Black folk we gotta step back and ask "what is the alternative" if we continue to support mediocrity and crime and low academic standards, among of multitude of things and simply blame "tha man" without acknowledging our own shortcomings, where will that leave US? I think this is a great idea, I know Atlanta came under similar criticism when they decided to enact a similar regulation. Of course, the only downside is other cities are now stuck with the folks that NO doesn't want. Imma say this and then I'm out, but seriously I just wanna know what is the alternative we can't continue to do nothing...let's stop complaining and just do...and yes that is inspite of all the obstacles that DO exist....

Very interesting article and while you have touched on a few key points, you cannot ignore the reality either. Being compassionate and charitable to those in need does not mean an escape from reality and the reality is, crime in Houston HAS significantly increased since the arrival of evacuees from New Orleans. That's not an indictment of the hard working, honest people who were forced to leave their homes, but people crime does not take a holiday nor does it go on a leave on absence in the face of disaster. What better element for a crimnal that a state of chaos. Just as there were decent citizens forced to leave, so was the criminal element.

That is NOT black on black racism and it's ridiculous to suggest as much. You think crime went on vacation in NY after 9/11? No. The facts are the facts and it's sad that the bad have made it worse for those trying to reclaim their lives.

Duane:

What a terrific post. You are right on, and I'm going to watch the follow-up comments closely.

Certainly there will be the elderly and chronically poor who need care, but starting the city back on the road to recovery with a WORKING class can't be wrong.

Houston has been taking the brunt of the former N.O. criminals, and their rates are up. Dispossessing gangstas and putting them into new places won't necessarily spread crime, it may force some into productive work.

Jesus said "the poor you will have always with you". Maybe so, but the poor should reflect the racial demographics.

Wow,

Plez you said a mouth full.

I actually had not formed an opinion on either side but now I am sure. Who the ___?____ (words I won’t use in public) do these politicians think they are. I wouldn’t give a ___?__ what a person chooses to do or not to do. You have no right to tell people that they can’t come home. Don’t get it wrong we as people need to pull ourselves up by our boot straps but don’t get it twisted black, white or the other as long as welfare has its lack of accountability people will be on it. And why does NO get to get rid of it’s poor people and dump them off on the rest of the world. Aw naw.

I usually don't have the time to respond to this many entries, but it's a slow day in the office.

My 2 cents: Without an inkling of personal responsibility; owning up and correcting those behaviors in your life that are keeping you back, you are DOOMED to failure. I have no pity on those who CHOOSE not to work or those who CHOOSE to blame the government or the white man for their misery. My parents were raised during the Depression in the Jim Crow South: everything we had, they worked extremely hard for AND they made sure that all of my brothers and sister knew (and appreciated) that fact from an early age. If Nagin wants a Chocolate City, he would be wise to go through that box of chocolates and pick the ones who will help re-build New Orleans... and let the scofflaws, ne'er-do-wells, criminals, and deadbeats stay where ever they scurried to when they were airlifted out of there six months ago.
