In case you have not heard by now, there is a new Black channel on the horizon. Well, actually, they have been around for about 5 years. Some of you may have heard of the MBC network (I am fortunate enough to live in the part of the country that has this channel). But soon, the rest of the world will know them as “The Black Family Channel” starting with St. Louis, MO.

This fall the network will premiere a variety of prime time and local origination shows plus an urban kids block created by Robert Townsend, who joined the network as President and CEO of Production earlier this year. In addition, the network will continue to offer its signature programs such as black college sports classics, nightly news, classic movies, specials and documentaries. “We are particularly excited because this is our first launch with Charter Communications,” stated Samara Cummins, Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing. “Black Family Channel is the most appealing tool that the cable industry has to substantially increase acquisition and digital upgrades in African-American households.”

From what I know about them from hearing from the founder sometime ago, they have made a very strong commitment to not emulate the dark path that BET has taken by setting all black folks back 200 years to the age of picking cotton by showing iggnat (spelled correctly) videos of us humping, sucking, licking……you get the idea. I know that they have been showing primarily a lot of old Gospel videos and preaching, but their content has been slowly expanding and evolving over the years.

Let’s throw our support behind them so that hopefully they do not “sell out” like BET did to Viacom.
