You r right it did killed the show we had enough fathers who died or left there family and the wife had to do it all by there self.

Yeah, I can’t remember why they killed off his character. Was it a contract
dispute? I guess I could look.
You are right. I remember they tried to bring in Thelma’s husband to try to
play the strong male, but he was just too soft for me.

when they killed amos off the show they killed the show . goodtimes was bad times after that shame on the writers directors or whoever it was who didnt want to keep him.

i used to want a dad like him growing up. i never had a dad growing up and when i watched good times, i would wish for a dad like him.i envied the close family atmosphere even in times of problems.when john amos left the show a part of me left too. good times wasnt the same anymore.

To me John Amos made the show. Nothing against Jimmy Walker, but he was the Jim Carrey of the 70′s (over-actor). But having meet John, he was a delight to talk to and a very friendly person.

I think that killing John Amos’character off of Good Times made the show go downhill.I think that had he stayed,the show would have lasted as long as the Jefferson’s and Esther Rolle would have never left and the Carl Dixon would have never existed,maybe for a few episodes,but that is about it.

I think the show was still great even though James Evans Sr. (John Amos) was killed off the show. Because Jimmie Walker (James Evans Jr.) is so funny and makes the show, without him the show would have been terrible.

Both of you guys are right. Just the other day, TVOne did a Good Times marathon. I had to walk out of the room after the third episode (episodes where James had already passed). The show should have been called “Sad Times” at that point.

John Amos was a positive TV dad. I think Bookman was right, the show did fall off after they killed him off. After a while, it got hard watching people always having bad luck. To me that was the only draw back of the show.

Robin Harris’ character in House Party was definitely in the James Evans mold.

This was a really good article on him & the Thing with the Role of a Strong black father on TV. i think that after he was killed off, the show Fell off.

I was thinking that they should have a good times reunion special . the sad thing about that is Esther Rolle Passed a few years back.

I Grew up to the Reruns of goodtimes. I still watch them same shows over and over. I think it plays in the original sequence as it may have did back in the day.

Goodtimes is where i got my Name from (Crab name in HS Band) .. yeah it Stuck with me. HA!
