…Chandler businessman Reggie Fowler’s purchase of the Minnesota Vikings Monday is important for the ground it breaks.
Assuming league owners approve the sale, Fowler will become the first black man to own an NFL franchise.
It is the final frontier for blacks in professional football. Willie Thrower was the first black quarterback in the NFL, playing one game for the Chicago Bears in 1953. Art Shell became the first black coach when Al Davis hired him to run the Los Angeles Raiders in 1989.
…Fowler did not linger on his race Monday, saying that becoming the first black to own an NFL team was “a great thing,” but not a big deal.
