The future of history resides in – what else? – iPods.

Students from Brandeis University this fall will be participating in the collection of oral histories at West Medford’s Shiloh Baptist Church as part of phase two of the West Medford African-American Remembrance Project.

Mark Auslander, a professor of anthropology at Brandeis University, said his students plan to combine the stories they collect with music to create an audio portrait of the historic African-American neighborhood in West Medford. The program will be downloadable, Auslander said, and anyone with an iPod will be able to listen while strolling past the historic houses and parks that are the subjects of the audio tour. (more…)

If only something like this was done in New Orleans….

If you own a recordable .mp3 device, consider doing something like this with the family. This would be a great thing to do when visiting older family members. Perhaps bring it with you on the next family reunion.

Much of our history as black Americans has been wiped out due to circumstances beyond our control. Today we have that control. Don’t think that your life is too boring and that this would be a waste of time. Who knows, your data could be helpful to a future family member trying to unearth their rich heritage.
