The other day some friends of ours were telling us about their son and how he has just entered into the land of puberty. Although this is a very natural stage that all children go through at some point, some of the things they were noticing was a little too advanced (if you know what I mean).
When I reflect on my own dad and how he actually broke it down to me at that stage of life, like most fathers from the ol’ skool, it was very brief and lacking some of the more pertenant details.
Years later after getting married and having children, I came across a book I wished was around back when I was just entering my teen years. Unless the situation demands it, I will not go out of my way to talk to female. Now don’t get me wrong, I am probably one of the friendliest people you would ever meet. But besides my wife, mom, some aunts and a cousin, you will not find female’s number in my cellphone. To some, this may sound crazy and a bit excessive. But hey, I have 10 years of wedded bliss backing me on these practical steps. Thanks to good friends the Lord brought to my life some years back, I learned these lessons before getting married. Different strategies are required for different folks.
I really feel for our young people in this day and age as they are exposed to so much sexualized imagery at such a young age. What used to be hidden in the back of convenience store counters and adult book stores is now as close as your remote. Even commercials and cartoons can sometimes sneak a few innuendos in there without you knowing it. Many of our young men and women in this day and age oftentimes because of a poor family structure back at home are left to the whims of outside forces to school them as they venture down the road of sexual understanding.
