For skiers, gathering celebrates King’s vision

“Club members chuckle when asked about the reactions they often get after others spot the hundreds of black skiers on the slopes at once.

“What’s going on?” is the most common inquiry, they say. Closer to home, even fellow blacks are baffled when they hear about the ski excursions.

“We’ve celebrated for so many years with candlelight vigils and marches,” said Sharon Sargeant, president of Ebony Ski and Racquet Club. “It’s not that we’ve forgotten Martin Luther King’s dream, but we’re celebrating it in a different way.”

“It’s a day to celebrate how far people have come,” said Gayle Guest-Brown, who works with the club’s youth racing team. “One of the barriers to skiing is it’s very expensive. Just the fact that we are on the mountain, that we can afford to ski, is a testament to our well-being.” (more–may need to register…)
