TheGrio.com and NewsOne form a partnership.

“NBC News and Interactive One announced a partnership this week that will form the premier African-American digital news alliance with the widest audience reach in the industry. This unprecedented partnership leverages complementary assets from NBC News’ TheGrio.com and Interactive One’s NewsOne.com to create an expanded platform for African-American journalism. Based on comScore measurement, the combined net audience of NewsOne and TheGrio was 2.1 million in May 2011, up from 661,500 in May 2010. As the online usage of Black Americans continues to grow, this digital alliance between TheGrio and NewsOne presents a new opportunity to better connect, inform and engage the African-American audience.”

I think this is great news for them. I also see it as a smart business move. Especially since both sites are reporting the same stories.

What gets me here is that both of these sites have been in business for less than 5 years and they already see the value of collaboration on this scale. In the meantime, many of our nation’s Black owned newspapers (who have been in existence for many decades) continue to struggle BY CHOICE because they simply refuse to follow this practical business model.

I have pleaded Black-owned newspapers back in 2007 and 2009. Now, I think the end is near for most of them.
