ZZ210AF8F6 A Lesson For Black Politicians (From Ebony, 1969)

“A study of the outcome of black mayoralty races (including last year’s election of Richard Hatcher in Gary, Ind.,) reveals some secrets of victory. First of all, the candidate, like most blacks in responsible positions, should be over-qualified. Secondly, he should get the block support of all black voters in his district. A black vote counts as much as a white one. Thirdly, he should not ignore the white vote if he can, without equivocation, win white votes (a white vote counts as much as a black vote). And finally, once in office, he must be above reproach. Regardless of what some leaders might say, the black man does not and should not have the right to be as slothful and crooked as some white men in office. Today more than ever before, the black man needs and deserves a one-hundred per cent hones effort from every other black man. It’s the only way we can eventually win.”
