“To protect the health of the next generation, each of us needs to confront the stigma that forces too many of our sons, brothers and friends into the shadows, and prevents them from seeking HIV prevention services that can help reverse the current trend.” ~Dr. Kevin Fenton
Folks in the media and in the activist arena have also been pushing the notion that somehow these rising rates are related to so-called educational deficit. Here was my response to that notion online the other day.
“This is not an educational issue. Practice unprotected sex and you risk getting a STD. Use dirty needles, you risk getting infected. CLASS DISMISSED. This is a “will” issue. Why is it that when the AIDS epidemic blew up in the White community, in a matter of years they were able to keep HIV at bay for the most part. But for Blacks, the assumption is always that we are too ignorant to understand how to use a freaking condom?”
We live in a world today where people want to do what they want without consequence. And when the piper finally comes around for his payment, we tell him that the neighbor across the street has his money.
I have addressed this whole issue in detail back in 2009. You can read it here.
Quick! Let’s blanket them with more ‘education’
I also debated someone from the Washington City Paper on this issue.
Calling Amanda Hess of the Washington City Paper
Amanda responds. So do I
If we really want to see our people get set free from this HIV/AIDS trend, we have to first be willing to love ourselves enough to tell the whole truth.
