My internet connection has been slow all day which explains why I am just now getting around to posting something.
Like many of you, I was shocked to hear the news about the passing of Michael Jackson. Instead of posting video montages of my favorite moments of MJ’s career, I decided to take a few minutes to reflect on how Jackson added some funny and memorable moments in my life.
#I can remember as a kid growing up in church practicing the Moonwalk with my friends either in the back of the church or out in the parking lot. We would each take turns sliding backwards in our hard church shoes oftentimes bumping into someone or something. We did it so much that we wore a hole right through the bottom of our shoes.
#Those of us who were not crazy enough to spend a mini fortune to get the Michael Jackson jacket resorted to finding a Members Only jacket and pushing up the sleeves. You knew the fad was over when those jackets began showing up at the local Goodwill store. And to think that stores like Gimbles, Wannamakers and Macy’s used to have them on lock down. Now Ned the drunk was sportin’ it.
#Kids who used to wear high waters to school for a brief moment in history could blend in the crowd. Why? Because they could always pass as trying sport that MJ look.
#Every time “Beat it” was played on somebody’s radio on the school bus, it was as if we were hearing it for the first time.
#”Billie Jean” was the first music video I had ever seen. After that video, I became hooked on all music videos. This opened the door for me to appreciate all types of music.
#It was just embarrassingly funny to see the lengths folks would go to create the MJ glove. I seem to remember one kid using one of those white gloves folks wear for formal occasions (you know, kinda like the gloves worn by the Marines). A white garden glove? No problem.
#The only times in my life I actually sat down to watch the entire American Music Awards was when MJ won something. I remember his entourage would include the likes of Webster, Brooke Shields and from time to time some other played out actor.
#I remember how the girls used to say how he was sooooooo cute. In today’s world, he is not thuggish enough.
MJ simply made music something very fun to watch. I seriously doubt there will be anybody who could replace him.
