(That’s both my thumbs and the thumbs of my wife)
HBO’s “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” was a huge success in our household. I can’t remember the last time I watched a made for TV movie and actually clapped and cheered at the end. Seriously, I do not get all that emotional over a TV mini series, but this one left me with a smile.
Finally, an all-Black mini-series with great acting that was not set during the Jim Crow era, slavery, or in the hood. I’m had my fill of TV dramas with an mostly/all Black cast that did not leave me angry or tensed up. Cussing was very minimal and no sex scenes. I may sound old fashioned, but I still think one can tell a compelling story without all of that.
All the actors I thought did very well and Jill Scott’s performance was just awesome. The cinematography captured Botswana (the setting of the show), its people and colors beautifully. The animation during the beginning and end credits were very clever, creative and amusing.
I’m sure the more seasoned movie critics out here will find “i’s” that were not dotted or “t’s” that were not crossed. But as for me and my wife, this one is a huge winner in our house.
I just e-mailed HBO to thank them for putting this out. I also encouraged my Facebook family to please check it out.
