Open-Minded Parenting

“We do not force our beliefs onto our children.”

A preacher I was listening to the other day (never got his name) addressed this modern-day thought on parenting quite nicely in my view. Because I do not remember word for word his exact comment, I can paraphrase it pretty good.

“Hollywood spends billions of dollars on indoctrinating your child on what they want them to believe. But in the name of being open-minded, tolerant, and one of the “cool” parents, we stupidly give others one of the most sacred rites of parenthood: Teaching.”

The act of teaching itself is the impartation of knowledge based on a set of values. In other words, you can have 5 people teaching the same subject. But each one will inevitably emphasis something within the subject that is important to them.

Bottom line, it is foolish to play down or mute your beliefs. Because guess what? There is an entire industry out there that would be more than happy to do the job for you…for free. 10 to 20 years later, you’ll be just like many older parents today scratching your head and saying to yourself “When we were that age, we never…”
