Katrina has taught folks NOTHING.

Consider this post part of my “Conspiracy Theory Friday” series because it smacks down the notion that folks were “left behind” during Katrina.

MAY 2009 HURRICANE AWARENESS POLL RESULTS (Mason-Dixon Polling)

1,100 adults in Atlantic and Gulf coastal states were interviewed by telephone May 6 through May 11, 2009 by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. of Washington, D.C. The margin for error is +/-3%.

QUESTION: How vulnerable do you feel to damage from a hurricane
or related tornado or flooding hazards? Do you feel:

Extremely Vulnerable 9%
Somewhat Vulnerable 29%
Not Too Vulnerable 38%
Not At All Vulnerable 24%

QUESTION: Do you believe the 2009 hurricane season will be:

More active than 2008 16%
Less active than 2008 12%
About the same as 2008 56%
Not Sure (NOT READ) 16%

QUESTION: Do you have a family disaster plan in the event a
serious hurricane threatens your area, or not?

Yes 45%
No 55%

QUESTION: Since the last hurricane season, have you taken any
steps to make your home structurally stronger, or not?

Yes 17%
No 83%

And the big kahuna…

QUESTION: Whose recommendation or advice would cause you to
evacuate? (NOT READ)

None – would not evacuate 37%
Government/Elected Official 23%

TV/Radio Broadcast 22%
Friend/Relative 13%
Minister 1%
Social Media/Facebook/Twitter -
Other/Not Sure 4%

So based on this survey, either people would choose not to evacuate or would take the advice of the government OVER the advice of a friend.

But somehow we STILL  expect government to fix “stupid”.
