Sen. Tom Harkin has a bright new idea that has never been thought of in the history of mankind.

“U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin thinks the country should have a debate on whether the Medicare program providing health care to U.S. seniors ought to be expanded to cover children as well.” (more…)

Bill Clinton beat you to this years ago.

(nytimes.com) President Clinton will soon order a major effort to locate and sign up millions of children who are eligible for Medicaid but not enrolled in the program, White House officials say.

The officials said that Mr. Clinton was dismayed to find that most states had made little progress in enrolling children from low-income families in the last year.

At the time of his State of the Union Message late next month, the officials said, Mr. Clinton will order Federal and state agencies to step up their efforts by dispatching Medicaid eligibility workers to hospitals, clinics, day care centers, schools and factories.

In addition, the officials said, Mr. Clinton will urge states to simplify the application process, reminding them that they can accept Medicaid applications by mail and do not have to verify the financial assets of families who would otherwise qualify because of their low incomes. (more…)

If Americans wanted this so bad, why did Clinton have to issue an order to force states to enroll people in the program?

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi projected confidence and likened the bill to the creation of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.” (source)
