The Associated Press backtracks

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a May 22 story about the role race plays in gang crime, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Robin Toma said he heard anti-immigrant sentiment from black residents in the Hawaiian Gardens area after a gang sweep. Toma, the executive director of the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission, was referring to blog comments and did not know the race or location of the bloggers.

I guess he felt he had to find something…anything to make the huge recent arrest of 147 Hispanic gang members in the Hawaiian Gardens area. This is the same gang that was accused of terrorizing Black folks.

“Latino gang members sometimes circle the city in cars and shout threats at black people, a resident said. “They say, ‘You better walk home before we shoot you.’” The woman gave only her first name, Kathy, for fear of reprisals.” (more…)
