ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Black college athletes are graduating at higher rates than in the past.

The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for black athletes is 62 percent in 2009, up from 59 percent three years ago, according to a report released Monday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

The report also found that African-American athletes are graduating at higher rates than black college students as a whole. The most recent federal rate for all black students was 45 percent, compared with 53 percent for athletes. (more…)

Men struggling to finish at Black colleges

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – They’re no longer the only option for African-American students, but the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities brag that they provide a supportive environment where these students are more likely to succeed.

That, though, is not necessarily true.

An Associated Press analysis of government data on the 83 federally designated four-year HBCUs shows just 37 percent of their Black students finish a degree within six years. That’s four percentage points lower than the national college graduation rate for Black students.

One major reason: the struggles of Black men. Just 29 percent of HBCU males complete a bachelor’s degree within six years, the AP found. (more…)

>One would think that student athletes have less time to study than your typical college student. Yet student athletes are graduating at higher rates?

>I would like to see a breakdown of pursued majors by these student athletes. In other words, what percentage are General Education degrees?

>Is tutoring a factor behind the “improved” graduation rate numbers?

>Is this part of a trend? “NCAA hammers FSU in Tutor-gate ruling

>No doubt, a kid with a full scholarship and the sense to do class assignments in a timely manner will graduate. What percentage of these student athletes have a full scholarship?

Inquiring minds what to know.
