Now if I had to take a good guess, I would say that the majority of Black folks out here in cyberspace regardless of political persuasion support the idea that parents should have the choice on where they send their kids to school. Why? Because for a large percentage of us, we make enough money to send our kids to the school of our choice (Read “Is the Black blogosphere a fair representation of Black America?“).

While the issue of school choice has always been framed as a “conservative issue”, liberals have regularly exercised this right for their children for years while voting to deny that same right for those who could really use the option.

Will and Jada Smith have homeschooled their children for years. Now they have decided to take that learning experience to the next level.

Jada Pinkett Smith adds `schoolmaster’ to resume

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jada Pinkett Smith is adding another title to her resume: schoolmaster.

The actress-producer and her husband, Will Smith, opened the New Village Leadership Academy in Calabasas, Calif., last fall. The school is for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

Now Pinkett Smith hopes to open a companion high school.

Pinkett Smith says she decided to open the elementary school after developing a home-school program for her children. (more…)

Good for them and good for the children that will be helped with this option. But again, I wonder if they ever brought up their firm stance on school choice to President Obama (whom they both supported)? I bring this up because while the Smiths, the Obamas and many of us out here in cyberspace are enjoying our right to chose how our kids are educated, Obama just signed a bill that will eventually allow a voucher program in Washington D.C. to die over time.

This is how the White House responded~

“It wouldn’t make sense to disrupt the education of those that are in that system,” Gibbs said in discussing the president’s thinking. “And I think we’ll work with Congress to ensure that a disruption like that doesn’t take place.”

Asked if President Obama plans to restore the program’s funding in his full budget, which is currently being drafted, Gibbs said, “whether it’s in the budget or in the — the appropriations process,” the administration will work to make sure “that disruption doesn’t take place.”

Now let’s take a look at what happened on the campaign trail just a little over a year ago~

No sooner had we issued Elizabeth Green’s dispatch under the headline “Obama Open to Private School Vouchers” than his campaign was scrambling to undo the potential damage with the Democratic primary electorate. On February 20, his campaign issued a statement headlined, “Response to Misleading Reports Concerning Senator Obama’s Position on Vouchers” that said, “Senator Obama has always been a critic of vouchers.” The statement went on, “Throughout his career, he has voted against voucher proposals and voiced concern for siphoning off resources from our public schools.” It noted that Mr. Obama’s education agenda “does not include vouchers, in any shape or form. So what are we to believe here? Most importantly, will his fan base have the courage to take him to task on this important issue or will they simply look away?
