Any day now I am cutting video service from our cable company and just sticking with Internet. We are currently looking at some Internet based television options. I rarely watch television and what we are paying to crap TV is just nuts.

This whole thing reminded me of two stories. One is very recent and one happened back in January. Let’s look at the most recent story.

More Americans using Internet, antenna options instead of cable TV

CLAYTON, Del. — An increasing number of Americans are cutting the cord to their cable-television service, depending instead on a combination of Internet streaming services and old-fashioned, antenna-based over-the-air television.

[...]

The media research firm SNL Kagan reported in November that the number of Americans who pay for television service declined for the second consecutive quarter. A combined 335,000 people canceled their subscriptions in that period because of a weak economy and the increased availability of “over-the-top” — that is, Internet-based — programming.

Now let’s look at the touted “victory” for Blacks with the recent Comcast deal.

“Any African American viewer can also attest to the need for more diversity in programming. While Comcast has already led with its support for Black Entertainment Television and TVOne, this is an area where “more” truly is “better.”

Comcast’s pledge to further expand its commitment to minority programming comes as welcome news. With a promise of substantial minority participation at eight of the ten new independent channels it will soon launch, African American and other minority voices will have an even greater impact on what programming reaches our homes.”

Actually, I am reminded of one more story I just read earlier.

Comcast bills go up April 1

With Black unemployment higher than it has been in years, we are going to look for cheaper ways to get our entertainment. NCAAOM’s (National Coalition of African American Owned Media) move to demand more Black channels on a medium that is increasingly becoming too expensive was just DUMB. There is a reason why people like Queen Latifah are moving to the web and not the cable TV pipe and NCAAOM doesn’t get it.

Still, there is a part of me that believes that NCAAOM’s Christmas wish list to the FCC was completely bogus from jump

Just thinking out loud.
