It seems that both the media and now local district officials now presume to know more of what’s best for the American people than the people themselves.

From Pew Research:

“About 73 percent of those polled by the Washington-based Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said they approve of the plan, while 23 percent said they disapproved, according to the survey released today. About 67 percent said they agree with letting police detain anyone who can’t verify their legal status, compared with 29 percent who disapproved.

When asked if police should be allowed to question anyone they think may be in the country illegally, about 62 percent said they approved and 35 percent disapproved. More than half, 59 percent, said they supported the new Arizona law as a whole, while 32 percent said they don’t support the legislation.”

For the people in Massachusetts, according to Rasmussen 70% of polled individuals favor a ban on public benefits for illegals. At the same time, 48% oppose an immigration policy like that of Arizona.

New York Times/CBS News poll? Again, a majority of Americans support Arizona’s stance on illegal immigration.

But people like Susan Hebson know what’s best.

“Reveling in its first conference championship in 26 years, the Highland Park High School girls varsity basketball team has been selling cookies for months to raise funds for a tournament in Arizona. But those hoop dreams were dashed when players learned they couldn’t go because of that state’s new crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Safety concerns partly fueled the decision, but the trip also ‘would not be aligned with our beliefs and values,’ said District 113 Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson. That explanation, though, smacks of political protest to parents upset by the decision.”

26 years? I tell you what, I would have been one pissed parent.

On the other hand, the city of Los Angeles does have a significant illegal population. So in a way they are representing their constituents. But again, with both cities having large Latino populations, these silly bans and boycotts will in fact do more harm to the people they claim to represent than good.
