I’ll give Al Sharpton some credit for providing a much bigger picture of the problems that contributed to the mess surrounding the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones (the seven year old that was accidently shot by police in Detroit recently).
But I oftentimes find myself asking “Why is the killing of a Black kid by a White cop the flashpoint in time that causes us to pay closer attention to a problem that has been decades in the making?” As I am typing this, there is a news feed to the right of me that shows all the news outlets that have been covering this story. MSNBC, Time, ABC News, Huffington Post, etc. all have taken a sudden interest in the life of a little Black girl that just a couple of weeks ago was of little worth to them.
Speaking of little girls, commentator Boyce Watkins has been one of the few out there who dug deeper into the rape allegations against former NFL player Lawrence Taylor with an underage girl. In his exclusive with BlackVoices.com, he talks about a recent expose written by journalist Chiderah Aalisa. In her report, she interviews a young Black woman who gives the lowdown on the world of underage prostitution and many athletes and celebrities are in on the game.
According to this report back in 2007, Black teens make up the majority of the teen sex trade in the US.
Where is their breaking point? Or do they need the bullet from a White cop to get attention?
