On the popular 70′s sitcom “Good Times”, this struggling family of the ghetto had to rely on a very unreliable building superintendent to simply maintain the status quo. If a pipe needed to be replaced, a call was placed to “Bookman”, but don’t count on him to actually fix the problem. It did not take the Evans family long to realize that it was Bookman’s job to simply maintain the status quo of the building. His laziness earned him the title of “Buffalo Butt”.

In today’s world, there are those who straight up attempt to cut you off from the Black race if you dare utter a mumbling word against “Our First Black President”. The status quo regarding President Obama has been set–especially if you are a Black individual: Support him at all cost. Your only weapon to use against any an all of his critics? Accuse them of racism. If they are Black, accuse them of selling out. Plain and simple (simple-minded, that is).

Long time radio personality Tom Joyner has recently come out swinging with both gloves against two other radio personalities–Tavis Smiley and Cornel West. Strangely enough, he uses the recent faux pas of Time magazine editor-at-large Mark Halperin when he called President Obama a word that rhymes with “Nick”. How Halperin (who is a diehard Obama supporter) and Smiley/West are connected, I don’t know. But Joyner makes it a point to connect the dots.

“Well, yesterday, when Mark Halperin – a well-respected journalist, employed by a well-respected magazine and a contributor to a well-respected news network – had the audacity to call the president of the United States a dick, that was all I needed.

While I am appalled at Halperin’s statement, I have no expectations of him as a man and know nothing about his character. I am appalled, however, that as editor-at-large of Time magazine, he is responsible for among other things, deciding what stories will be covered in that publication. As the person in charge of political content, it is upsetting to know that he probably has not been objective in his dealings with material I and so many people look forward to (until now) reading each week. Needless to say, I’ve cancelled my subscription to Time magazine and hope you will too.

But I’m even more disgusted with Smiley and West, two brothers who I did have expectations of – and thought I knew. These two have done much worse than what Halperin has done because they set the tone for it, opened the door to it, and must take much of the blame for creating a climate that would make a white, professional journalist feel comfortable verbally and vulgarly attacking the first black president of the United States.”

Yup. This is the same Tom Joyner who some years ago had no problem at all blaming all of ills of society on then President Bush. This is the very same Tom Joyner who had no problem playing a rap song entitled “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” on his nationally-syndicated radio show. No problem at all.

But say a mumbling word about “our first Black President” and all of hell must be unleashed.

Sadly, Joyner is simply echoing the trend I wrote about in my post “He’s the President! Stop treating him like a baby” and in my other post “The Pact with Obama”. In both posts and in others, I make the case that people like Joyner actually do more harm to Obama than good by lowering the bar and urging others to go soft on him. It’s people like Joyner that through their own actions make the case that people like Sarah Palin have a much thicker skin than Obama. Palin is hammered DAILY by her critics with no holds barred. Bush was hammered daily by his critics and called every name in the book. And when the name could not be found, new names were invented. When Bush supporters suggested that these criticisms went too far, today’s Obama supporters were quick to throw it all under the blankets of “Freedom of Speech” and “Freedom of Expression”. Remember the movie that fantasized about Bush being assassinated? Yup, Bush could take it because after all, he was a powerful White man. But Obama? Shut up and keep looking low. He is our “First Black President” and that demands your respect. Don’t say a word about rising Black unemployment rates. Don’t say a word about him dropping bombs in Libya. Don’t say a word about many of his other broken promises. Just go easy on him while we shift the hard part of his job description over to the broad shoulders of White folks. After all, he’s just a “First BLACK President”.

As I mentioned before, Halperin is a diehard fanboy of the Obama presidency. In fact, he has consistently used his magazine to promote much of the Obama agenda while making a mockery of his critics. Yet he has this one on air faux pas of Obama and just like that, he is thrown in the dungeons of racism. More from Joyner.

“In case you believe I think Tavis and Cornel called the president an offensive name, I don’t. I think they did something even worse. Any black people with any sense know that racists on the job, at school, at church or on the bus wait for opportunities to feel comfortable enough to spew their evil thoughts. If a black person tells a racist joke in front of a racist or laughs at one, it won’t be long before the racist begins to fire off a couple of his own. Mark Halperin and others are no different. They hate the president because he is black, and Tavis and Cornel, by not having the sense to not give them the opening they waited for, went all in. And this is what we get.”

Tomorrow is the day in which we celebrate our declaration of INDEPENDENCE from political system that demanded respect to it’s king–by force. People like Tom Joyner are determined to reinstate that type of mentality on Black folks by lashing out against anybody that breaks the status quo. And unfortunately, he has a fan base that is more than happy to fight for this type of groupthink.
