Recently, I received a couple of e-mails from the Black news website theloop21.com. In it I was encouraged to tell readers of this site to have them participate in their “2010 Economic Survey of Black America”. I opted not to participate simply because asking such a small demographic of Black folks on such a broad issue does not tell the entire story.

Back in 2007, I featured an article from the Philadelphia Daily News on a study conducted by Pew Research. One of its main findings?

“When asked whether the values of middle-class and poor blacks become more similar or more different, 61 percent of the African-Americans surveyed said “more different.” Majorities of white and Hispanic respondents agreed with that. And the divide was greater among younger blacks.”

According to Pew, those making 75k or more have the highest representation online (94%). Only 60% of the 30k and below group is represented.

Even the “loop” study admits (according to their own press release) that this study was based on “…a panel of more than 3,000 college-educated African-American consumers and workers.” Also:

“TheLoop21.com collaborated with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to conduct this survey. The national sorority asked their college-educated membership from over 975 chapters in the U.S. and abroad to participate.”

(If this is the case, what is the unemployment rate between Black women and men? Last time I looked, it was much lower than that of Black males. College-educated Black women do not compete with low-skill Latino men or women.)

The college educated crowd in no way competes with the low-skill labor pool. That is why according to their poll, 51% of Black folks see no threat of illegal immigration on job opportunities for them. If you want the answer to that question, interview blue collar Black folks who oftentimes do not take online surveys.

Not too long ago, I spoke with two Black men as they were leaving a shelter. One of the topics that came up was how illegal immigration had impacted some of the their job prospects. I assure you that people like these bruthas and others like them do not take web polls.
