Over the years I have always found it so amusing that the harshest critics of conservative media are oftentimes the biggest consumers of such media. Fox News, for example gets beaten to death out in the blogosphere. But Fox news consistently has the highest ratings while networks like CNN and MSNBC are barely playing catch up. The way I typically find out about some questionable comment made by Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly is through folks who spend a great deal of time telling others that it’s garbage. How do they know what is being said without consuming such “garbage”?
I remember a while ago asking such a question and the response was cute at best:
“Well, I only look at Fox News, etc. just to get a balanced view.”
But again, if you spend 99% of your time bashing conservative media and preaching to others how bad it is, what is there to balance? Why torture yourself with “misinformation”? Again, criticism (especially if it’s constructive) can be a good thing. But for much of the criticism that I read out there (from both sides for that matter), bridge-building is not in mind.
Well, apparently I have been in the dark this morning. It seems that there is a certain cartoon that appeared in the New York Post that shows two cops gunning down a monkey, chimpanzee, ape, whatever. The cop says to the other cop “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.” This cartoon is a two-fer. It addresses what happened to the chimpanzee that attacked that peculiar woman who had the bright idea to domesticate this animal. Second, the suggestion here is that the intelligence of chimpanzees is what was behind this stimulus bill. I say, don’t insult the chimpanzees!
Shay of Bookerrising.net said “However, given that President Obama is intimately tied with said bill, even indirectly linking Barry with a chimp brings up racist imagery.” Mediatakeout.com headlines the incident as “RACIST???? REPUBLICAN LEANING NY NEWSPAPER PUTS OUT VERY QUESTIONABLE CARTOON!!!”
Problem #1: Obama did not write the bill
While Obama certainly pushed for a “stimulus” package, he or his administration did not write this bill. Most of the content of this bill came from Democrats both in the House and Senate. So the cartoonist, if this was implied would be inaccurate. If this cartoonist is a racist, then we would also have to label him an “idiot” for getting his facts twisted. But unfortunately, folks are more interested in promoting folks they deem as “racists” as undercover conniving schemers who can only be spotted by the trained eye.
Tell that one to the dummies that allegedly were plotting to kill Obama in Denver in broad daylight.
I commented later by saying “By playing these baseless word/picture games, folks are only making the idiocy of real racists out there relevant. Mind you, “racists” who have been pushed out of the mainstream.”
So I guess the next thing will be a close inspection of how White folks tie their shoes. Because if you look close enough, it kinda looks like a noose.
It is the fear-mongering of such watchmen that pull the opinions of such lame individuals back into the spotlight. David Duke’s opinion on politics has not mattered to mainstream America for years. Yet when Michael Steele became the GOP leader, folks were all too quick to hear him weigh in on Steele.
We could have really used the help of these “trained eyes” who can spot racism from a mile away while this stimulus bill was being debated. They could have just as easily spotted all the pork we are now tied to for the next few decades. Instead, we are left with over-analyzing cartoons. Pity.
