I am in the middle of a mid life rebirth. While writing has been and will always be a passion of mine, photography opportunities have been booming. Photography has always been one of my passions and words cannot express how happy I am when I get behind the camera.
From time to time I still manage to find time to jump into my little row boat and launch into the sea of political talk. Determined not to make it a transatlantic-type trip, I usually regulate my political day pass to Facebook, a few blogs and some talk radio.
One comment from a semi-popular political commentator this week had me quickly turning my sails and heading back to the dock. It was yet another fake plea that both sides would work together for the sake of the country. “Some of these cats still don’t get it”, I mumbled as I wavered between leaving a comment or just leaving the issue alone. Thankfully I decided to leave it alone.
Since the dawn of the American political system, political parties have fought aggressively against each other to prove to the American public that they are true keepers of the American flame. They will stop at NOTHING to discredit each other. The words “working together” has two different meanings: One for inside the beltway and one for outside the beltway. The outer-beltway version is similar to a Miss America pageant contestant who wishes for world peace. It sounds good in front of the judges but has no effect in war zones around the world. Once you cross into the beltway, “working together” simply means “working together with me to push MY agenda.”
Rush Limbaugh’s “I hope he fails” was no different than those on the left who supported the idea that Bush should have been impeached. This is politics in all of its glory…or stench.
It took the death of roughly 3,000 Americans in New York back in 2001 to get Democrats and Republicans just to sing a couple of versus of “God Bless America” TOGETHER. Yet some folks cling on to the hope that both sides can put aside their differences on a regular basis. Why?
So to all my political commentators or wanna-be political commentators who from time to time want to lament that politics is too uncivil, take off your Miss America crown, take off those dainty gloves. Grab your helmet and line up. Someone vision is going to shape this country. Pick your side and fight for it.
Too many Miss Americas and not enough Linebackers
