Just over a year ago, commentator Earl Ofari Hutchinson demanded an apology from The New York Post, News Corp (the parent company) and Rupert Murdoch (the owner of the parent company) for the now infamous monkey cartoon that was believed to be a depiction of President Obama. When News Corp finally issued an apology, it still was not good enough for him.
“The loud demands will continue that Murdoch back up his kind of sort of apology with real action. But he won’t. There’s simply too much money in racial trash talk (and cartooning), and too much silence from the higher ups that send a tacit signal condoning it. That silence is Murdoch’s ultimate trump card.”
Fast forward to today and we find Hutchinson once again demanding an apology. This time from the Spanish station Univision for its latest poor portrayal of Black folks (Afro wigs and small spears). Univision issues an apology and Hutchinson’s response?
“Civil rights activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, applauded Univision’s quick response. ‘They took corporate responsibility,’ Hutchinson said. ‘They acknowledge there was a major problem about a show on Univision promoting stereotypes about Africans.”
That’s it? No threats of continued protest until the apology is backed up by “real action”? Please tell me that this brutha’s response was severely edited.
I think we are more concerned about how others portray us than how we portray ourselves. There are plenty of black folks acting a fool in the media. I don’t know if Hutchinson has dealt with them or not. As for the YT clip, what of the black actor who took the role? Do you think he bears any responsibility for the imagery that is being broadcast?

Absolutely! He clearly had no problem being made fun of like that.

Bottom line: Hutchinson is incapable of calling a spade a spade primarily because like Univision, he supports illegal immigration. And the fake Black/Brown coalition must hold–no matter what. On the other hand, Univision certainly does not have a problem calling out a spade.
No big deal. Right, Hutch?
Related: Letter of complaint written to Univision some ten years ago regarding other programing that contained racist depictions of Black folks.
